Travel Insurance
Considered one of the most important items on a trip abroad, travel insurance is highly recommended regardless of the purpose of the trip.
There is always a suitable form of insurance, depending on the purpose of the trip: tourism, study or business.
The types of insurance vary according to age, length of stay abroad and the cover offered.
Insurance can be taken out for days, weeks or months.
You should avoid any unforeseen health problems or accidents.
It is essential to be protected during your trip.
Any hospitalization, surgery or simple consultation abroad can be very expensive.
Many hospitals require payment before hospitalization, which can complicate the situation even more if you don’t have the necessary funds for the care you need.
There are several countries that only allow entry into their territories on presentation of travel insurance.
In addition to insurance, some countries require specific amounts of cover for certain items, such as accidents and illnesses, which are considered to be the most important.
This is the case in Europe, where the countries that are part of the European community require visitors to have insurance with a minimum cover of EUR 30,000.00 (thirty thousand euros) for accidents and illnesses.
Basically, it’s a guarantee that the visitor will have their own support if they need to use the country’s health service.
Because they are private, they allow you to be treated throughout the private health network without having to pay anything in advance.
In other words, the insurance does not work by means of payments or reimbursements, you just have to activate the service.
Insurance cover may vary according to the type of insurance taken out, but in general the main covers are:
- Medical assistance in the event of illness or accident;
- Expenditure on medicines;
- Basic dental services;
- Advance of funds for bail in case of accidents;
- Personal accident insurance;
- Hotel expenses for convalescence;
- Health and funeral repatriation;
- Health transfer;
- Transfer of a family member and accompanying a minor;
- Legal assistance in the event of accidents;
- Expenses for flight delays or cancellations;
- Additional compensation for lost luggage;
- Luggage identification and tracking services;
- Compensation for delay in locating luggage;
- Assistance in the event of loss or theft of documents or credit cards; and
- Return trip guarantee and other services.
To use the insurance, you need to call a toll-free number (0800) depending on the country you are in.
Each country has a different contact telephone number, which is provided in the insurance policy.
All you have to do to make an appointment is enter your insurance policy number.
The attending doctor or hospital will be informed and scheduled according to your location and the specialty you want to see.
All consultations and appointments must always be made in advance by telephone.
The only exceptions are in cases where the student is unconscious and unable to make any prior contact.
In this case and only in this case, the student can go to any hospital to be seen.
In these situations, the student may have to pay for the medical service in advance in order to receive reimbursement from the insurance company at a later date.
To do this, they need to present the documents and medical prescriptions that prove the seriousness of the condition that prevented them from attending the pre-arranged appointment, as well as all the receipts for the payments made.
